One PDF in.
The right files out.
Splitr splits a big PDF into separate files by chapter, invoice, student or any rule you pick. Check every part before it's saved. Your files never leave your computer.
Three steps. No surprises.
You always see the proposed parts and can change them before a single file is written.
Drop in a PDF
Drag it onto the window or press Ctrl+O. Password-protected files work too, and the password is never saved.
Pick how to split
Type page ranges, cut into equal chunks, or let a preset find chapters, invoices or students for you.
Review, then export
Rename parts, move a boundary, join or drop a part. Then save one PDF per part, or bundle them into a ZIP.
From exact page numbers to “split by student.”
Three range modes cover the quick jobs and the clever ones.
Type the pages
When you already know where the breaks are.
1-14, 15-30, 31
→ 3 files
Equal-sized parts
Cut a long file into chunks of N pages, or into exactly N parts.
→ 1–10, 11–20, 21–30 …
Split by meaning
Presets find split points from bookmarks, text patterns or blank pages, with optional AI for the rest.
Split by invoice number
→ one file per invoice
Built for real paperwork.
Reads scanned pages
Built-in OCR reads text on scans, right on your computer, so presets work on paper you fed through a scanner.
Fix parts before saving
Move a start or end and the neighbouring part moves with it, so no page is ever lost by accident.
File names that make sense
Name files with a template like {original} - {index} - {title}. Clashing names get a number, never overwritten.
Fully keyboard friendly
Every control is reachable with Tab, Space and the arrow keys. No mouse required.
Bring your own AI, or none
Use a Claude, OpenAI or Gemini key, your ChatGPT plan, or a local model via Ollama or LM Studio. Or leave AI off.
Save your own presets
Describe a split in plain words, like “split whenever a new client name appears,” and save it for next time.
Your PDFs stay on your computer.
Splitr is a desktop app, not an upload site. There's no account, no cloud copy of your files, and no tracking.
- Your original is never changed. Splitr only writes new files.
- Offline by default. Custom, Fixed, bookmark, pattern and blank-page splits never touch the internet.
- AI is opt-in. It sends only short text excerpts per page, never the whole file, and only after you agree.
- Keys in secure storage. API keys live in Windows Credential Manager, macOS Keychain or Linux Secret Service.
- No analytics. Splitr collects nothing about you.

Says “Splitr is damaged”?
It isn't. That's how macOS labels unsigned apps that still carry the download flag. Run this in Terminal, then open Splitr again:
xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Splitr.app
Which Mac do I have?
Apple menu › About This Mac. “Chip: Apple M…” means Apple Silicon; “Processor: Intel” means Intel.

Good to know.
Is Splitr free?
Yes. Download it and use it. If you turn on the optional AI mode with an online service, that service bills you for your own usage under your own key or plan.
Do I need an internet connection?
No. Custom and Fixed splits, plus the bookmark, text pattern and blank page presets, work fully offline. Splitr only goes online for AI, and only when you've turned AI on. You can even run AI offline with a local model through Ollama or LM Studio.
Why does my computer warn me about the installer?
The installers aren't code-signed yet. Windows and macOS show a warning for any unsigned app the first time it opens. The install steps walk you past it safely. Signing is planned as Splitr is shared more widely.
What does the AI actually see?
Only the first and last lines of each page, the page numbers and your instruction. The whole file is never sent. Splitr asks for your consent the first time, and you can turn AI off at any time in Settings.
Does it work with scanned PDFs?
Yes. With Read scanned pages (OCR) on (the default), Splitr reads printed text on scanned pages locally before splitting. It reads Latin-script printed text, not handwriting.
How big a PDF can it handle?
Large ones. 8 GB of memory is recommended for PDFs over 500 pages.
Stop splitting PDFs by hand.
